Anglo-Brunei Treaty of Friendship and Commerce 1847.

Treaty Of Friendship And Commerce With Britain. 

27th May 1847.

It's between Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II and James Brooke.

- Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II was forced to sign the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce with Britain.
- James Brooke was appointed the first British Consul-General in Brunei

Reasons For Signing the 1847 Treaty.

To make sure Brunei was under British control in order to benefit British trade, commerce and territorial expansion.

To prevent other powers from gaining influence in Brunei. The British was concerned when Americans began to show interest in Borneo

The Terms of the treaty regarding Britain were ; 

- British warships could freely enter Brunei.

- Britain and Brunei would not impose duties and taxes on all imports and exports

- British subjects would have special privilege

The Terms of the treaty regarding Brunei were ; 

- The Sultan of Brunei could not surrender any of his territories.

- Britain and Brunei would not impose duties and taxes on all imports and exports

- Both Britain and Brunei would work to suppress piracy in the seas.

Consequences of The 1847 Treaty.

- Brunei was no longer free to deal with other countries. It changed the sovereign status of Brunei drastically.

- The Treaty defined British commercial and political interest in Borneo for more clearly.

- The Treaty firmly established British control over Brunei.

- The Treaty led to direct British intervention in the affairs of Brunei.

- British secured exclusive rights to trade, and other foreign powers had little chance to spreading their influence over Brunei
